Frequently asked
The questions every careful buyer is right to ask.
Is this a subscription? What happens to my collection if I don't renew?
Your collection is always yours, on your computer, no matter what. If you don't renew, the app moves to read-only mode. You can browse every label, view every photo, print what you've already designed, and export your full collection to CSV or JSON at any time. What you can't do until you renew is create new records or edit existing ones. We call this perpetual fallback: your data is never held hostage and you can always evaluate whether renewal is worth it with your own real collection in front of you.
What happens if you go out of business?
Your collection lives on your computer in plain JSON backup files (the .clearbench format) you can read with any text editor. The format is documented. We can't strand you. The desktop app keeps working without our servers because it doesn't need them for cataloguing, editing, or printing — none of that goes near a server in the first place. The only ClearBench-side network calls are auto-updates, and those just stop happening; the app keeps running. Licence checks go to Lemon Squeezy (the payments company that holds your purchase record), and the app stays fully usable offline for 30 days at a time between checks. If both ClearBench and Lemon Squeezy were ever gone at the same time, the app would eventually run out of grace and drop into read-only mode — same fallback as licence expiry: full browse, search, print, and export of everything you've already catalogued, just no new records or edits. Your data stays yours, in a format you can open with anything.
What format are the backups? Can I open them without ClearBench?
Yes. Backups are a single .clearbench file, which is a plain JSON document with all your collections, labels, items, custom schemas, and preferences inside it, plus an index to your photos (which live as ordinary image files alongside, in the app's data folder). Rename a .clearbench file to .json and any text editor will open it. The schema is documented and stable across versions; older backups always import into newer builds.
Can I import from Excel or CSV?
Yes. The CSV import wizard is the canonical way to bring an existing collection in. Export your spreadsheet as CSV, drop it onto ClearBench, and the wizard reads the headers, suggests a schema, and creates the type, the collection, and every item in one go. The same import path round-trips back out: export to CSV any time, edit in Excel, re-import (it upserts by collection number, so re-importing the same file updates rows rather than duplicating them).
Does it work fully offline?
Yes. ClearBench is a native desktop app. There's no web UI to load and no server it depends on for cataloguing or label printing. Open the app on a plane, a remote site, or a no-WiFi cabin and everything works: browse, edit, print PDFs, design labels. The only features that need the internet are licence activation (a one-time check with Lemon Squeezy when you first paste in the key from your receipt email), the occasional re-check of that licence when you happen to be online afterwards, and the auto-update check. The app stays fully usable offline for 30 days at a stretch between licence checks, which is more than long enough to cover any show booth, plane, or remote-site trip you'll realistically take.
Can I use it on more than one computer?
Yes. The one licence covers macOS and Windows, and you can install ClearBench on as many of your own computers as you like. Sync between your own machines is optional and on the roadmap; until it lands, the in-app export creates a single .clearbench backup file you can copy across and import on the other machine in a couple of minutes. If you ever turn sync on, your data is encrypted on your device before it leaves, so our server only sees an unreadable blob, never your collection, and your passphrase never reaches us.
iPhone or Android app?
Not yet. ClearBench is a desktop product today. A mobile companion that syncs from your computer is on the roadmap; we'll mention it here when it ships.
How does the photos-from-phone feature work? Do I need to install anything?
No app, no install. Click 'Add from phone' on any item and ClearBench shows a QR code on your computer screen. Open your phone's camera, point it at the code, and your phone opens a small upload page in its browser. Take photos or pick from Camera Roll, hit upload, and they land on the item record in ClearBench within seconds. The transfer runs over your home WiFi (peer-to-peer between your phone and your computer). Nothing reaches our servers, no cloud upload, no third-party host. Works with any phone that has a camera and a browser.
Why no free trial?
Two reasons. First, the 30-day money-back refund covers the same trust concern a trial would. If after a month it isn't right for you, ask for a refund, no questions. Second, the perpetual fallback means even if you stop renewing later, the app drops to read-only mode rather than locking you out, so you can always re-evaluate with your own real data in front of you. Between those two, a trial would just be friction we'd rather not put between you and the product.
Can I see what it looks like before I buy?
Yes. The Labels and Catalogue pages show the actual app. We'll add a screencast of the full workflow as soon as we record one.
